Senior Gov’t Official Interdicted, Arrested for Losing National Exam Container Keys

Lukenya Assistant County Commissioner Elizabeth Karitu was on Saturday arrested and detained after she lost the keys to a container where the upcoming national examination papers are stored.

While confirming her arrest, Machakos County Commissioner Elizabeth Maina said Ms. Karitu was also interdicted and plans were underway to replace her.

She is currently being detained at Parklands Police Station in Nairobi as investigations into the circumstances in which she lost the keys continue.

“She claims she went to Avenue Hospital in Nairobi and when she returned she found her car had been broken into and her handbag, which contained the keys, missing,” said Ms. Maina.

“Security has been beefed up where the container is and efforts made with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to replace the padlock immediately,” she said.

Last week, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said no excuse of losing the keys will be tolerated and Deputy County commissioners will be held individually accountable.

“There will be no key that will be lost. No Deputy County Commissioner will be allowed to lose a key. There will be no excuse,” said Matiang’i.

Matiang'i must be aware that this has been a well trodden path for stealing exam papers.Knowing the significance of the Key,why would the lady carry it around with her instead of placing it somewhere in her house;unless she had just gotten it...
Most importantly, did she pass"security clearence".I trust that one does not give a questionable character a key to the SAFE...
Playing the devil's advocate, could it have happened just like she said, meaning an honest mistake? We allmake mistakes.
