Former Kenyan Footballer Kevin Oliech Dies in Germany While in Transit to the US for Cancer Treatment

Former Harambee Stars football player Kevin Oliech has succumbed to cancer.

Kevin, who also played for Kenyan Premier League (KPL) sides Mathare United and Thika United in the past, died in Germany while traveling to the US to seek cancer treatment, The Standard reported.

Family spokesperson Nixon Onywanda Oliech told Citizen Digital that Kelvin had battled cancer for four years before his death on Sunday.

“For four years he’s been in and out of the hospital. Last year he came back to Kenya then returned to Germany but we’ve unfortunately lost him,” he said.

Kevin and Harambee Stars legend Dennis Oliech are brothers. The deceased also represented other Kenyan teams including Nairobi City Stars, Tusker, Ushuru, and Securicor, now defunct.

His death comes about two years after the passing of his mother Mary Oliech in July 2018. Mary was a cancer survivor.

The family, known for producing football stars, also lost their eldest brother Steve Okumu, a former Gor Mahia striker.

Okumu died in a road accident in Rhode Island in the US in 2002 aged 26. He had just arrived in the US on a football scholarship.
