Uhuru Extends Nationwide Curfew to January 2021 in War Against Covid-19

President Kenyatta has announced a raft of new measures aimed at suppressing the second wave of Covid-19.

Addressing the nation after chairing the 6th Extraordinary Session of the National and County Governments Coordinating Summit, Uhuru extended the existing nationwide curfew by 60 days to January 3rd.

The curfew will now run from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am daily as opposed to between 11:00 pm to 4:00 as it was previously.

“The nationwide curfew is extended up to January 3, 2021, and beginning tonight, the curfew will now be enforced between 10 pm and 4 am,” he said.

Uhuru further ordered operators of hotels, restaurants, eateries, nightclubs, and bars to close by 9:00 pm and ensure enhanced compliance with the Health Ministry guidelines, failure to which the establishment will be shut down.

He warned the government may be forced to impose localized lockdowns and restrictions on counties with a high rate of Covid-19 infections.

“Where there is an upsurge of COVID-cases in a specific county, the national government will consult the affected county to issue localized lockdowns and movement restrictions as may be necessary to stem the spread of the disease.”

All political gatherings and rallies in the country have also been banned for a period of 60 days effective immediately. The president also announced a public campaign dubbed ‘No Mask No Service’ where Kenyans will be denied services in government offices for not wearing facemasks.

“To enhance civic responsibility, national and county governments have resolved that going forward services will not be rendered to anyone who does not abide by the Ministry of Health protocols. I call on the private sector to join the government in the public campaign dubbed ‘No Mask, No Service’/ ‘Bila Barakoa, Hakuna Huduma,’” he noted.
