Nairobi Court Releases Human Rights Activist Mutemi wa Kiama Unconditionally

A Nairobi court on Tuesday released human rights activist Mutemi wa Kiama unconditionally.

This is after the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence to charge him for alleged cybercrime offenses.

Kiama, who was accused of producing and circulating posters urging the world not to lend money to Kenya, had been freed on Sh500,000 cash bail pending investigations into alleged cybercrime offenses.

Senior resident magistrate Jane Muthoni of Milimani law courts had also ordered him not to use his social media accounts and report to the investigating officer daily until the mention of the case on April 20th.

Investigating Officer Patrick Kibowen had told the court that he was looking into possible offenses under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act of 2018.

Mutemi was accused of producing and posters using the images of President Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto.

The two widely circulated posters warned the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other international lenders against giving loans to Kenya.

The public notices warned that both Kenyatta and Ruto are not authorized to transact any business on behalf of Kenyans and that future generations shall not be held liable for penalties or bad loans borrowed by the two.
