IEBC Warns Candidates Against Campaigning Outside Gazetted Period

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned candidates and political parties against engaging in campaigns following the expiry of the gazetted period.
In a statement, the electoral commission said the official campaign window closed at 6.00 pm on Saturday, warning that any acts of political campaigns outside this period would amount to a breach of the Electoral Code of Conduct.
IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati said candidates and parties should now prepare themselves for the general election on Tuesday.
On Saturday, the two leading political coalitions—Kenya Kwanza and Azimio La Umoja One Kenya held their final campaign rallies at Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums in Nairobi respectively.
Making their final submissions ahead of the upcoming elections, presidential contenders William Ruto (Kenya Kwanza) and Raila Odinga (Azimio La Umoja) exuded confidence that they will emerge victorious and pledged to revive the country’s troubled economy.
“We are running to make Kenya a first-class global democracy and economy. We are running to build a Kenya of hope and opportunity; a Kenya not of 45 individual tribes but one big Kenyan tribe,” Odinga said.
He pledged that in the first 100 days, the Azimio government will begin paying Sh6000 to families living below the poverty line until they reach a place where they can feed their children without our help.
“This is what we are calling Social Protection…These families need direct government funds to feed their children,” said Odinga.
On his part, Ruto said his team has a solid plan to revive the country’s economy and bring down the cost of living.
"Kenyans have received a terrible beating as we cannot afford to put food on the table. We are all victims of an economic system gone rogue on us. But do not worry. It is time to have the courage to say no to anything that threatens our civility," said Ruto.
