KCAA Tasked with Regulating Development Near Airports

Kenya's aviation sector is experiencing a surge in growth, prompting the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development to implement reforms to ensure its continued success.
During a Thursday meeting with the Kenya Association of Air Operators, Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen emphasized the ministry's commitment to modernization and outlined several key initiatives. A central pillar of this strategy involves the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA). The authority has been directed to develop a legal framework specifically designed to regulate construction in the vicinity of airports.
This new legislation aims to prevent uncoordinated development from hindering the aviation industry's expansion. Murkomen's directive comes in response to a proposal by Governor Sakaja to raise the building height limit to 75 stories in designated areas. While such development could provide economic benefits, concerns exist regarding its potential impact on flight safety and airspace management.
The KCAA already enforces regulations that require developers to obtain approval before constructing tall buildings near airports. These restrictions ensure that structures do not interfere with flight paths or critical air traffic control procedures. Additionally, the authority strictly regulates objects placed on airport grounds, as they can disrupt essential radar signals used for communication between pilots and ground control.
Beyond the regulatory framework, Murkomen has highlighted the importance of long-term planning for Kenya's key airports. The creation of master plans for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport is intended to guide future development and ensure their continued efficiency. Furthermore, the establishment of a dedicated Airstrip Fund would provide financial resources for the maintenance of airfields across the nation. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to a robust national aviation network.
