Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has initiated an investigation into a recent livestock poisoning incident in Migori County while responding to public outcry following the death of several cows.
The animals are believed to have consumed contaminated water from a local mining site, raising significant concerns among community members. Upon receiving complaints from locals, Joho promptly dispatched a team of investigators to address the issue. Initial findings suggest that the cows exhibited signs of poisoning, likely due to ingesting tainted water. A multi-agency team, comprising officials from various departments including the regional mining office, National Environment Management Authority, County Public Health Department, and security agencies, conducted a thorough inspection of the facility on September 27, 2024.
The inspection revealed that five cows had perished, while six others displayed symptoms consistent with poisoning from the suspected contaminated water source. Joho emphasizes his ministry's commitment to a comprehensive investigation, assuring that all necessary procedures would be followed to ensure justice for those affected. The Cabinet Secretary warns that the facility owners would face legal consequences if found culpable. He cites relevant sections of the Mining Act, 2016, which mandate fair compensation for losses caused by mining operations and require proper disposal of toxic waste to prevent water contamination.
In April 2024, a similar occurrence in Ndemra Village, Nyatike Sub County, resulted in the hospitalization of six individuals and the loss of livestock after consuming contaminated spring water. The mining company H-Nuo is suspected of being responsible for the water contamination in the Nyatike area. In response to these events, Joho has called upon the regional security team in Migori to conduct an expedited and thorough investigation. The Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs has reiterated its commitment to ensuring responsible and sustainable mining practices, emphasizing the importance of holding companies accountable for any environmental damage resulting from their operations.
Drugbaron orders livestock killers to be investigated.Conclusion-the same investigators who permit muuaji’s drug business take suspects to court to prove he is in control. However not even one of them(senseless investigators)can secretly leak the number of deaths coursed by Joho’s drugs in Mombasa.
