The tragic death of Richard Otieno, a prominent community activist and emerging politician from Elburgon, has generated widespread grief and demands for justice.
Otieno, who had earned a diploma in social work and community development from Molo Technical and Vocational College, devoted his life to enhancing the lives of those in his community. Born in December 1992 in Ololong’oi village, Narok County, Otieno relocated to Elburgon in 1993 following the violent tribal clashes that year. These early experiences with ethnic conflict and political marginalization profoundly shaped his commitment to social justice.
Despite financial challenges that threatened his education, the support of benevolent individuals and a bursary from Molo MP Kuria Kimani enabled him to complete his studies. Otieno’s dedication to community welfare earned him the affectionate title “The President of Molo.” He effectively engaged with the local populace in Kikuyu, raising funds through social media to assist underprivileged children with their education.
His philanthropic initiatives and outspoken critiques regarding local issues, including the shortcomings of the Social Health Insurance Fund and the Social Health Authority, solidified his status as a beloved figure in Molo.
However, Otieno faced significant obstacles in his political ambitions. In 2022, he ran for the Elburgon ward representative seat with the Usawa Party but was unsuccessful. Undeterred, he expressed intentions to pursue another bid in 2027.
Otieno's previously amicable relationship with MP Kuria Kimani deteriorated over political disagreements, especially regarding Kimani’s views on the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. His vocal nature and political engagement made him susceptible to threats. His sister, Roseline Apondi, recounts receiving a particularly alarming message referring to him as a “corpse.”
Otieno’s widow, Margaret Mwihaki, only became aware of these threats shortly before his untimely death and has voiced her sorrow while demanding justice. The investigation into Otieno’s murder, which occurred on Saturday night, is underway, according to Molo Police Commander Timon Odingo.
While no arrests have been made, authorities report progress in the case, urging the community for patience as they work to uncover the motives and perpetrators involved.
