ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has ruled out any prospect of an alliance with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Sifuna emphasizes that ODM's strategic alliances will only be with parties that align with their 'pro-people policies'. Addressing the presence of several ODM members in Ruto's Cabinet, Sifuna clarifies that these individuals do not represent the party's official position. Among those who have joined the government are notable figures such as Hassan Joho, Wycliffe Oparanya, John Mbadi, Opiyo Wandayi, and Beatrice Askul.
Sifuna reiterates that while these members are entitled to their political choices, they do not speak on behalf of ODM, which is actively preparing for the 2027 elections, a directive endorsed by Raila Odinga and supported by the Central Committee. Sifuna also confronts internal party tensions, particularly from members who have threatened to challenge his leadership based on his stance against the government.
He acknowledges that his role as Secretary General depends on the party membership while expressing his commitment to the party's core values and vision. He adds that ODM aims to field a presidential candidate in the upcoming elections, asserting, "We will not give up this fight to build a more just, fair, and democratic state, no matter how many times we try and fail."
Sifuna paints a concerning picture of the nation's current climate, attributing widespread fear and disillusionment to the policies enacted by the Kenya Kwanza Government. He criticizes the administration's handling of sectors such as education, health, and taxation, arguing that these strategies have adversely affected the Kenyan population. Articulating ODM's vision, Sifuna pledges to foster a prosperous and modern nation where all citizens can realize their social, economic, and democratic rights.
He expresses his dedication to this vision and the goal of achieving power through democratic means. He reaffirms ODM's position as an opposition party, distinct from the ruling government, and reiterates that ODM remains an active member of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition. Sifuna dismisses any ambiguity regarding the party's status, asserting that misinformation has been propagated by some individuals.
He emphasizes ODM's commitment to holding the government accountable and advocating for the rights of the populace. In response to criticism from both within ODM and coalition partners such as Wiper's Kalonzo Musyoka, Sifuna defends the party's actions, maintaining that ODM continues to play a vital role in the opposition. He concludes with a reaffirmation of his commitment to the party's principles and his determination to continue serving as Secretary General as long as he has the backing of the party membership.
