In a recent interview with journalist Mark Masai, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka opened up about his political journey, sharing insights from a candid conversation with former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Kalonzo revealed that Uhuru cautioned him regarding his tendency to exhibit excessive trust in the volatile landscape of Kenyan politics, a characteristic that has significantly influenced his experiences and strategic decisions.
He addressed multiple topics including Raila Odinga's current political strategies and his own aspirations for the presidency.
Kalonzo frames his future objectives against the backdrop of the upcoming 2027 elections, where he aims to present a strong challenge to President William Ruto. A notable moment in their discussion was Kalonzo's recounting his recent interaction with Kenyatta, who delivered a forthright critique of Kalonzo’s political approach.
“Uhuru told me, 'My brother Steve, forgive me for what I am about to tell you. The problem with you is you're too trusting,'” Kalonzo said.
This comment highlights an essential theme in Kalonzo's political narrative, specifically his experiences with betrayal and unfulfilled expectations within political alliances. Reflecting on his previous roles as Raila Odinga's running mate during the 2013 and 2017 elections, Kalonzo disclosed details of an agreement that stipulated Raila's support for his presidential bid in 2022—a pact that ultimately did not come to fruition.
“The agreement was, win or lose, to support Kalonzo Musyoka in 2022, and that is what Uhuru meant when he said I was too trusting,” he stated, indicating his feelings of disillusionment.
Kalonzo further acknowledged the unexpected need to interview for the position of Raila's running mate in one of the past elections. Now, with Raila Odinga focusing on a bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship, Kalonzo's political standing has become increasingly tenuous. Many observers are positioning him as a potential figurehead for the opposition, a role that carries significant expectations and challenges.
He candidly assesses the current state of the Azimio coalition, remarking, “As of now, we are in Azimio, which is almost spent.”
Despite the political complexities, Kalonzo maintains a cordial relationship with Uhuru Kenyatta. This was exemplified by Kenyatta's attendance at Kalonzo’s daughter Damarie Saada's wedding in December 2024. The Wiper leader has further suggested that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga should consider retiring from active politics if he does not secure the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC). Kalonzo expresses hope for Raila's candidacy, citing his extensive leadership skills as beneficial for both the country and the continent.
Kalonzo stated, "I don't see how Raila Odinga would lose the chairmanship and come back and say he wants to lead Azimio. I would be amazed personally. That would not be the Raila I know."
He emphasizes that if Raila wins, it would be a significant accomplishment for himself, Kenya, and Africa. However, he believes that a loss should prompt Raila to step back from politics, advising him to join former President Uhuru Kenyatta as a retired statesman. President William Ruto has publicly endorsed Raila for the continental position, where he will compete against Mahmoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti and Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar.
