A Nigerian traveller Gloria Omisore sparked a disturbance at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after being denied boarding due to visa complications.
Omisore, en route from Lagos to Manchester with a layover in Paris, was informed that she lacked the essential French visa required for her connection, prompting a heated exchange with airline personnel.
According to reports from The New York Post, Omisore's agitation intensified upon receiving an offer for an alternative flight to London, which she categorically refused.
Her escalating frustration manifested in aggressive behaviour towards staff at Kenya Airways' check-in counter as she demanded compensation for the disruption to her travel plans. The situation took an unexpected turn when, amid her outburst and while menstruating, Omisore allegedly removed and threw three used sanitary pads at the check-in area, one landing on the floor.
This act ignited further chaos, captured in video footage, which showed her confrontational demeanour as she insisted on receiving a sanitary towel and retaining her mobile phone. During the confrontation, Omisore threatened to escalate the matter to high-ranking officials, declaring her intent to speak with Nigeria’s Minister of Finance.
A visibly frustrated check-in agent responded dismissively, suggesting, "Call the president of Nigeria. You will not fly on Kenya Airways. You will never enter our airline again."
In response to the incident, Kenya Airways later issued a formal statement reaffirming its policies regarding passenger boarding requirements. The airline highlights that it is the individual's responsibility to ensure they possess the required travel documentation and clarifies that they do not provide accommodation in instances where boarding is denied.
"In a distressing turn of events, the guest resorted to inappropriate behaviour by removing and throwing three used sanitary pads at our employees. We strongly condemn such conduct. While we remain committed to delivering exceptional service, we expect all interactions to be based on mutual respect. Our employees deserve to work in a safe and dignified environment, and we do not tolerate any abuse from our employees or guests."
Further action was taken by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, collaborating with Kenyan authorities to arrange for Omisore’s deportation back to Nigeria on the same day. Michael Achimugu, a spokesperson for the Authority, confirms that an agreement had been reached, enabling her to board a flight back later that evening.
