President William Ruto has announced a Sh1 billion allocation to Nairobi County dedicated to constructing additional classrooms, supplementing the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).
The announcement was made Tuesday during a visit to St Teresa Girls Secondary School in Mathare. The funds are intended to address the urgent need for improved educational facilities, particularly in informal schools where resources are often lacking. President Ruto emphasizes the importance of ensuring quality education for all children, regardless of their school's status.
During the visit, President Ruto pledged support for the construction of ten new classrooms at St Teresa Girls Secondary School and five additional classrooms at St Teresa Primary School, which together serve over 1,200 students. He has also committed Sh5 million towards equipping a new dormitory for girls at St Teresa Girls Secondary School. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, accompanying the President, affirmed his commitment to uninterrupted education for all students and highlighted the Dishi na County program, which provides nutritious meals, including chapati, to students.
Sakaja has requested President Ruto's assistance in acquiring a machine capable of producing one million chapatis for the school feeding program.
President Ruto's visit is part of a weeklong development tour, during which he will commission projects across all 17 constituencies in Nairobi County. This initiative underscores the administration's dedication to addressing the needs of the city's youth through strategic investments in education and infrastructure.
The Nairobi tour follows a recent political agreement between Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s ODM party, signed last Friday, and is being viewed as a test of their new partnership. The President commenced his activities in Eastleigh on Monday, where he outlined his development plans. He is scheduled to conclude the day with a significant rally at Kamkunji Grounds. Historically, Kamukunji Grounds have been a focal point for anti-government rallies and opposition figures.
Ruto’s itinerary included commissioning the Kamukunji Technical Vocational College, inspecting the Bangkok Fresh Produce Market, and observing the upgrading of Desert Pitch. Governor Johnson Sakaja and various Members of Parliament are accompanying President Ruto on this tour, with Kamkunji MP Yusuf Hassan serving as the host on Monday. Analysts suggest that Sakaja stands to benefit significantly from the Ruto-Raila accord, with the President’s visit potentially bolstering his re-election prospects in the 2027 polls.
As he reaches the midpoint of his term, Ruto’s tour is expected to highlight development projects initiated under his administration and to promote his newly formed alliance with Odinga. This tour represents President Ruto’s first major development initiative in Nairobi since his election in 2022.
