Tinder Connection Leads to Arrest of South African Man After Nairobi Teen Found in Westlands Hotel

The disappearance of a 17-year-old Nairobi schoolgirl has triggered an arrest and ignited a national conversation regarding online safety for minors, particularly on dating platforms.
Bradley Zwane, a 26-year-old South African national, is currently in custody following the recovery of the teenager from a Westlands hotel room last month.
The teenager, reportedly introduced to Tinder by a classmate, connected with Zwane shortly before her disappearance. After the parents filed a missing person report at Kibra Police Station, the search led authorities to a high-end hotel, where she was found with Zwane.
The mother describes the nightmarish ordeal, recalling, "I didn't sleep that night... By dawn, I was at her school, hoping for answers. That's when I learned from her friend that they had gone to meet someone together. We involved the police immediately."
A search of the hotel room uncovered five Kenyan passports, four new and one stamped with travel to South Africa and Russia, along with used condoms. During questioning, Zwane claimed he believed the girl was of legal age, citing her Tinder profile, which falsely indicated she was 18. "She told me she was 18 and had just completed high school," Zwane stated. "I asked for her ID, but she laughed and said it was a '4.' I asked again, but she insisted she was 18."
His explanation has failed to quell criticism aimed at digital platforms, especially dating apps, for their lax verification processes, which may allow minors to interact with adults. The ongoing investigation will also explore how the hotel allowed entry to an underage individual without proper identification. Authorities are also investigating Zwane's alleged involvement with an international betting firm.
Zwane claimed the passports belonged to his company manager, stating, "These passports are my company manager's. He recently travelled to Europe. I shouldn't have had them." Investigators are working to determine whether the documents are connected to illicit activities beyond this immediate case.
Tinder, which is intended for users aged 18 and older, faces scrutiny for its accessibility to underage individuals. The teenager's mother is pleading for greater vigilance and has expressed deep anguish. "He called me and tried to talk. I told him, 'Please don't destroy my child's future, 'she recounts. "She's just 17. If something terrible had happened, how would he have lived with that?"
Zwane remains in custody at Kibra Police Station and may face charges including defilement.
