Gachagua Asks Trump to Appoint US Envoy Who Can Hold Ruto Accountable

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged the United States to appoint a seasoned ambassador to Nairobi.
This comes amid escalating political tensions and growing unease over human rights in Kenya. The Democratic Change Party (DCP) leader's appeal comes as civil society organisations and opposition figures increasingly criticise President William Ruto's administration, alleging the suppression of dissent and the weakening of democratic institutions.
Gachagua references the tenure of former US envoy Steve Hempstone, highlighting his role during a period of democratic fragility in Kenya. He expresses hope that an ambassador of similar stature could help restore democratic norms, citing concerns over police brutality and enforced disappearances.
"Hempstone came in to help the people of Kenya when they faced similar circumstances of violation of human rights and the erosion of democracy," he said.
Historically, US ambassadors have played a pivotal role in advocating for transparency and accountability in Kenya. Michael Ranneberger, who served from 2006 to 2011, was notably outspoken during the post-election violence of 2007–2008.
His successor, Robert Godec, maintained pressure on the Uhuru-Ruto government to uphold democratic standards throughout his tenure from 2013 to 2019. More recently, Meg Whitman’s term from 2022 to 2024 was marked by cautious diplomacy during a politically charged period.
The US diplomatic mission in Nairobi is currently led by Chargé d’Affaires Carla Benini, who was appointed in July 2025.
