Treasury CS Mbadi Urges ODM to Choose Dialogue Over Mass Protests

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has urged ODM members to drop renewed calls for mass protests and instead pursue dialogue.

In a televised interview on Wednesday, Mbadi warned that demonstrations could reopen old political divisions and undermine the party’s aim of providing stability and solutions. He noted that ODM, like any political organisation, should build confidence among its supporters and avoid recurring confrontations.

Citing the example of the late Raila Odinga, he said the party’s long-standing approach had favoured negotiation and national conversation. Mbadi’s remarks come amid growing tension within ODM following its decision to work with President William Ruto’s administration.

He expressed concern that some leaders, particularly from Nyanza, were promoting mass action without considering its long-term impact. He argued that such moves could isolate the party and weaken its national profile, emphasising that ODM’s strength lies in its broad support across Kenya.

His intervention followed a weekend of heated statements at ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino threatened to organise nationwide protests over the rising cost of living, citing increased education and commodity expenses.

Siaya Governor James Orengo supported the call, saying Kenyans are ready to return to the streets in response to what he described as poor governance.
