Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo Impeached
Nyamira Governor Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo has been removed from office following an impeachment vote in the County Assembly.
The vote capped months of political tension and repeated attempts to unseat him. The motion, tabled by Bonyamatuta Ward representative Julius Kimwomi Matwere, accused the Governor of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and making irregular appointments.
Assembly records indicate that 23 of the 31 members present supported the motion, with four abstaining. Another four MCAs wrote to the Speaker asking to be included in the final tally, highlighting the extent of dissatisfaction within the chamber.
A central issue in the motion was the Governor’s use of “Bunge Mashinani” sessions, informal public forums that were found to have no legal basis. Critics argued that these meetings enabled decisions to be made outside formal legislative processes, weakening the authority of the assembly.
One such decision was the approval of Peris Nyaboke-Oroko as County Agriculture Minister during a disputed period of leadership and without following established procedures. Further allegations involved the irregular appointment of committee members for Keroka town and the creation of a Public Service Board panel through the same informal sessions.
These actions, said to have taken place between October 2024 and June 2025, were described as unlawful and indicative of a disregard for institutional checks and balances. This was the third attempt to impeach Governor Nyaribo.
While earlier efforts were unsuccessful, the latest vote showed a strengthened opposition and a renewed push by MCAs to assert their oversight role. The Governor is expected to contest the decision through legal and constitutional channels.
