100 Cuban Doctors to Pocket Sh800,000 Each Per Month in Kenya

Each of the 100 Cuban doctors expected to arrive in Kenya on May 28th will pocket a salary of Sh882,180 per month.

Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki said a deal signed between the Kenyan and Cuban government placed the medics in Job Group S.

This means that each of the medical practitioners from the Island country will take home more than the Sh765,188 that leaders of majority and minority in Parliament, Principal Secretaries, the army commander and Inspector-General of Police earn.

They will also earn more than the Sh621,250 that  Navy and Air Force commanders, Members of Parliament, Senators, county assembly Speakers and deputy governors take home.

“The doctors are coming in as specialists and have been absorbed into the medical service at Job Group S which caters for specialists,” CS Kariuki said.

In the collective bargaining agreement signed between the Kenyan doctors’ union and the State in 2017; doctors in Job Group S are entitled to a minimum wage of Sh 86,810 and a maximum of Sh882,180.

The Cuban doctors will further get furnished homes, flight tickets during their annual leave, paid utilities and cars from both the National and county governments.

Each of the 47 counties will get two Cuban doctors, who will deliver services in their areas of specialties.

Are they also getting 20 bodyguards each as those in group S? It will only be fair to give them. Kenya is extremely rich country. Look at the number of Chinese expatriates it's bringing in the country. Last time I counted they were over 100,000 and counting

I partly agree with you @Guest1. What is the goal of having these specialists? Are they going to teach our own certain skills? This would be a reasonable amount if supplies were also included cos we know gova hospitals do NOT have supplies courtesy of our OWN corrupt doctors. Having said that, it is unfair to see such an astronomical figure paid to foreigners while our own doctors and nurses working in these same hospitals are poorly paid. To see gova dish money to some foreigners when they could have gotten them on charity(yep, like doctors without borders accompanied by super qualified nurses) is total BS. Colonial mentality.

I thought they were coming to help. Our greed will finish us. Money is not everything. Let Kenyan schools start teaching patriotism, ethics and cultural values. Loving and believing in your own people. This we can only do when we love ourselves first.

As long as they do the job well it is worth it. Compared to our politicians who pocket huge salaries and all they do is spread tribalism and hate. Most of our Kenyan doctors are paid full salaries for only work 2 hrs per day in public hospitals and stealing drugs/supplies etc.

I agree with your opinion @Kenya...Kenyan doctors are no better than Kenyan politicians, that is a fact.

And like in the US, Kenyan doctors want where the money is... Specialization....which is not a bad thing perse...but they open private clinics yet they are paid public hospital doctors...sema conflict of interest.....with meds and some equipment siphoning/sharing. Then again, doctors don't want to go to rural areas.. same scenario in US.... Let the Cubans come....infact take some to the urban area public hospitals and let Wanjiku enjoy unhurried, dependable, dignified time with a doctor who is HAPPY to see her GET BETTER HEALTH....not a vampire who wants to suck the last coin from her.

This job offer is the only one I have ever seen in my life where one is paid maximum pay on entry, anyone know how much a medical specialist in kenya(kenyan) makes?, as wananchi what can we do to prevent this? This is one of the stupidest deal uhuru signed, to pay them maximum. Am so ashamed of being kenyan with its corruption from head of state uhuru kenyarra

Our Kenyan specialists who separated the conjoined twins in KNH earn one third of the amount.

The truth is that we are currently training all the specialities in medicine in Kenya now at Nairobi and moi university medical schools.

There's a shortage of medical doctors in Kenya and every effort should be made to bridge the gap....however it should make economic sense. The amount being paid to get a single Cuban doctor could be diverted to the medical schools so that they are able to train two more specialists per year. The good thing is that as you train to be a specialist you are also offering patient care.

In Kenya we prefer using the term consultants, which is synonymous to a specialist. So the government dupes Kenyans to believe they are getting a good deal but in reality nothing will improve. You'd rather buy more medical supplies with the cash.

And here is the bombshell,,,,,,,,although each Cuban doctor is to be paid around 800k, each will pocket only 150k. The other 650k is paid directly to Cuban government. So they are actually an export, earning foreign currency to the Cuban government.

Before folks here start explaining how "Kenyan doctors are doing brain surgery on the wrong patient, are stealing hospital drugs to sell in their personal chemist".....I'll request that those who've actually worked in a hospital at home to offer opinion.
