The government, through the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) is seeking to demolish Nairobi’s Wakulima Market to pave way for the construction of an ultra-modern overpass.
The flyover will link Enterprise Rd to the Nairobi central business district. The overpass, also referred to as a viaduct, will be constructed atop the Nairobi Railways gardens and is expected to ease traffic along the busy Mombasa Rd. The 2-kilometre road will be the longest flyover in Nairobi.
“Design of the viaduct will commence after the completion of feasibility study and agreement on the relocation of Wakulima Market,” KURA said in a statement.
The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will finance the ambitious project. KURA's engineer Silas Kinoti said the project is part of the long-term term plan under the Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Masterplan called NIUPLAN.
“At the same time it is intended to go a long way in expanding the CBD as well as alter permanently the Nairobi city centre landscape and give it a modern look,” he stated.
“So far several consultative meetings in the Months of April, May and June 2018 have been held with stakeholders including the Muthurwa Estate Residents as part of the ongoing Resettlement Action Plan process. These studies are being conducted in compliance with relevant Kenya legislations and JICA Environmental and Social Safeguard Guidelines,” the urban roads authority added.

Development Developments is the way to go while the noisemakers keep making noises.Usa,Uk have borrowed heavily to Chinese yaaani at 210%,it is said that even the 4th/5th kids which r not yet born will have to pay for trillions Americans have borrowed n if it’s the case in Kenya aslong as development is concerned borrowing is a MUST for any country to reach it future?I thank God Personally I borrowed heavily 10/13 years ago to develop myself but today am happy I owe nobody coz I have paid of all my loans so borrowing to invest in long term developments not a bad idea.Hii loan tutalipa na mafuta ya Turkana
And what will happen to the people who do business at wakulima market, has anyone thought that far?
The Chinese have this government so high up their ass that no one is thinking about the rest of us, our children and their future!
We have sold ourselves!
Japanese, not Chinese.
Vision 2090
How are the Japanese going to treat Kenyans? As slaves? Devil is in the details. We hope the government is going to consider, not just money but the dignity of Kenyans as they sign contracts. Development that is not grounded is not development. God help Kenya!!!
This should teach people, your tribesman will never actually help you out. Where will the government take those displaced traders?? sad story!
It is a lesson to ALL Kenyans that just because so and so is of a certain tribe does not mean that particular tribe gets to gain.
Where will the government take those displaced traders??
This should teach people never to trust politicians!
"So far several consultative meetings in the Months of April, May and June 2018 have been held with stakeholders including the Muthurwa Estate Residents as part of the ongoing Resettlement Action Plan process" - If you know of nay traders si you ask them? There is a plan to relocate them to several areas but heh bash the govt first and then get answers later. This is well known but relying on Mwakilihi for details will not get you answers
I have never known of one single demolition in Nairobi without months even years of advanced notice. The dirty secret is that many people with allocations in markets and road reserves have sold them off leaving unsuspecting traders with worthless "investments". Others keep bribing to buy time but there's only so much time you can buy. But no, rule of law doesn't get you political mileage.
If we can't beat corruption let us join in & feast on whatever small crumbs that fall from our bwenyenyes feasting tables! I say, Uhuru keep borrowing like silly & let's see what becomes of this great nation! Anyone wants to join me?
I see tge Hand of Engineer Raila in this. The HandShake is Working.
