Hassan Joho's Company Lands SGR Cargo Transportation Deal Worth Billions

A company linked to Mombasa County Governor Ali Hassan Joho has landed a lucrative Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) deal that could see it rake in billions of shillings.

The Daily Nation reports that the company, which is allegedly owned by Joho, is among two firms that have signed a deal with Kenya Railway Corporation (KRC) for transportation of bulk cargo through SGR.

The publication says that Grain Bulk Handlers Limited (GBHL) and Autoport Freight Terminals Ltd (AFTL) have been granted huge discounts to ferry cargo from Mombasa to Nairobi through the new railway line.

Under the deal, the two firms will reportedly enjoy preferential rates to transport cargo over a period of 10 years at up to 80 percent discount.

The Daily Nation, however, reports that this discount is against the maximum volume discount of 10 percent allowed by KRC's tariff book.

This means that the two companies will ferry cargo at a special rate of Sh45, 000 per wagon, down from the normal fee of Sh214, 700.

Under the deal, AFTL has pledged to move 1.6 million tonnes (24,615 wagons) per year while GBHL promised to ferry 4.3 million tonnes (66,153 wagons).

AFTL is owned by Governor Joho's family while GBHL is linked to influential businessman Mohamed Jaffer, the Nation says.

KRC has also agreed to lease two facilities in Nairobi to the two companies for a period of 45 years. GBHL has been leased 60 acres while Autoport port will get 26 acres.

Of course the best tenders and deals go to the well connected politicians. We will never get a chance even if we can afford.

80% discount before we pay China? How does that make sense? Now we have to "borrow" money from the diaspora, IMF and World Bank to pay China!!!

Does anybody know which companies delivered bulk cargo using the old railway lines, that is if not the KRC itself.I ask this because since these companies have experience delivering bulk cargo, and thus proven, why not give them the contract?
Were tenders offered? My understanding of such business is that bids are accepted from potential companies to deliver cargo, and the lowest bid, without compromising quality gets the contract?

Maxilley, it's not that straight cut in Kenya. Corruption in the tender process is rampant. Sample this:-
After NYS2 many suppliers were stopped or stopped on their own after long delays in payment.. the kids at the institutions needed food, so I, among others, were issued with LPOs tukaendelea. In the process, tenders reqs were floated and I applied. Tenders zimetoka, sikupata..yet I was the current supplier
.. supplied for almost 6 months.. no payment even if we had been assured payment per LPO within 1-3 months...and Now am not QUALIFIED to get a tender. Does it make sense and I've been supplying without fail?
Corruption is engraved in the system...

Why can't they say they were allowed to use SGR for free. 80% discount in our stores is called clearance or giving away what the stores do not want.

This is just a bunch of crap, still making a profit from a white elephant project,..10 years/45 years, shutting out anyone else who might have the muscle, lying to us it's a genuine deal, we ain't stupid, truth is it won't last that long...we've got ports coming up along the east african coast that'll screw up such corruption.
