Court Summons Managers of Six Nairobi Supermarkets Accused of Selling Poisonous Meat

A Nairobi court has summoned managers of six city-based supermarkets whose meat sections were shut down this week for allegedly selling poisonous meat.
The six outlets were closed on Thursday by health officers from Nairobi county government over allegations of contravening section 4 and 36 (1) of Food, Drugs and Chemical Substances Cap 254.
“Those who fail to honor the summons will be arrested. They have no otherwise. Human life must be respected,” Nairobi County Health Executive Mohamed Dagane said.
The supermarket officials have been summoned to explain to the court why they have been using preservatives beyond the legally allowed limit of 500 milligrams per kilogram.
The outlets that were shut down include Tusker Mattress in Eastlands, Naivas Supermarket Gateway Mall, Naivas Supermarket Rabai Road, Muthaiga Fine Meat Limited and Tuskys Supermarket Kenyatta Avenue.
They are also accused of illegally processing, treating, labeling, packaging, selling and advertising food in a manner that is false, misleading and deceptive in trade.
The managers further face charges of endangering human life and engaging in businesses not captured in their licenses.
