Kenya Airways Honors Tennis Star Angella Okutoyi After Historic Wimbledon Win

Kenya Airways (KQ) accorded Kenyan tennis sensation Angela Okutoyi a heroic treat following her historic Wimbledon win over the weekend.

The 18-year-old star was flown back to Nairobi on Monday aboard Kenya Airways’ business class after Tennis Kenya made a request to the national airline to upgrade her to business class.

During the flight, the attendant called for the attention of other passengers to congratulate Okutoyi for making Kenya proud. Upon landing, cakes and champagne bottles were set on the plane to throw a mini-party for the Wimbledon champion.

“Karibu nyumbani @Okutoyiangella2. Ladies and gentleman, the Kenyan queen of tennis is here!” Kenya Airways wrote on Twitter.

Okutoyi was welcomed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by top officials from the Ministry of Sports, among them Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed.

Okutoyi and her Dutch teammate Rose Marie Nijkamp beat Canadian pair Kayla Cross and Victoria Mboko by 2 sets to 1 to clinch the girls' doubles victory at Wimbledon on Saturday.

President Kenyatta congratulated the teenager for being the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam. The president hailed Okutoyi's historic victory as a momentous achievement that has not only lifted Kenya's profile in world tennis but that will also inspire a generation of young players to excel in the sport.
