Why Kenyan Star Vivianne Walked Away From Fame to Start Over in the US

Kenyan singer and author Vivian Wambui, known professionally as Vivianne, has relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, citing the need to step back from the pressures of her public life.

Wambui, a mother of two, said the move was not motivated by career opportunities but by a desire to reclaim her sense of self away from constant scrutiny. “When you are in the public eye, everyone has an opinion about your life and how you should live it,” she said. “The one person I had not trained to trust and listen to was myself.”

Her experience reflects the personal toll that fame can take. While in Kenya, Wambui attempted to manage the pressures of stardom by enrolling in Bible school and studying physiology, seeking clarity and balance. Despite these efforts, she felt that a complete break from the public eye was necessary to find the peace she needed.

Life in the United States has presented its own challenges. Wambui described the immigrant experience as one of adjustment and isolation. “In the US, once you arrive, you are simply labelled an immigrant,” she said, noting that the fast-paced and individualistic culture leaves little room for social connection. She emphasised the importance of resilience while navigating these difficulties.

For her, leaving Kenya was both a retreat from the demands of fame and a step toward self-preservation. She frames the move not as a pause in her musical career but as a chance to rediscover her voice beyond the expectations of her audience.
