DPP Orders Police to Seize Pastor Mackenzie’s Assets

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has ordered police to seize the property of Pastor Paul Mackenzie, who is linked to the Shakahola massacre.

In a statement on Tuesday, Haji said he was horrified at what he termed as heinous crimes committed by Mackenzie and his cult in Shakahola village of Malindi, Kilifi County.

The DPP vowed to prosecute Mackenzie and any other persons involved in the massacre to the full extent of the law.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects may have committed serious crimes including but not limited to murder; procuring, counseling and aiding persons to kill themselves; terrorist acts by threatening national security and public safety and radicalization,” read the statement.

Haji stated that the acts were in violation of various statutes including the Penal Code, the Prevention of Terrorism Act, the International Crimes Act, the Proceeds of Crime, and the Anti-Money Laundering Act, among others.”

“Further, the ODPP has directed investigation officers to identify the assets of the suspects herein for purposes of preservation, confiscation and forfeiture in accordance with the law,” he added.

On Tuesday, the death toll in the Shakahola massacre climbed to 90 after 17 more bodies were exhumed from shallow graves in the vast piece of land believed to be owned by Mackenzie.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on Tuesday said Mackenzie could be charged with terrorism and genocide at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for brainwashing people to fast to death.

The Kenya Red Cross said 212 people had been reported missing to its support desk in Malindi.

This pastor needs a good lawyer, DPP has no authority to claim any one's assets. I can foresee he won't get justice due to mister and president involvement on this. Justice must prevail in all sodes

This guy should be confident that he will not be convicted, unless they can prove that he physically participated in the murder by an overt action. That will be a a tough one for the prosecutor. The dead fools died by suicide and their own free will and no one physically withheld food from them. Freedom of worship is guaranteed in the constitution, and the constitution does not prescribe what should be preached. He just needs a good lawyer and he'll walk free to continue preaching.
