Gang Posing as Cops Steal Sh 4M Stashed in Foreigner's Car

Detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) on Saturday, June 10, launched a manhunt for five suspects who posed as police officers and robbed a foreign couple of Ksh4 million.

The DCI revealed that the couple of Chinese descent had withdrawn the money from a bank in Chiromo, Nairobi, on Saturday, June 9. The gang reportedly followed them from Chiromo to Juja in Kiambu County, where they robbed them of the cash.

"But as they were driving along Bob Haris road, a white Toyota Axio intercepted their vehicle before the five thugs jumped out of the car and forcefully gained entry into their vehicle, making away with the cash," DCI's statement read in part.

The criminals had carefully planned out the heist. They intercepted the couple's vehicle and forced their way in, eventually making off with the loot. The DCI sleuths revealed that the victim had been on their way to Kiahuria in Juja, where they operated a quarry.

The DCI has released a photo of one of the perpetrators, asking the public to provide information that would lead to their arrest. In September 2022, the directorate reported a similar robbery involving a British national in the Lang'ata estate in Nairobi, with the victim losing Ksh4 million.

The foreigner claimed to have lost the money at a shopping mall in Nairobi. After the incident, the police launched an inquiry to figure out what had occurred. Operatives acquired CCTV recordings to determine how the foreigner's money vanished without his knowledge. Responding to the incident, the DCI cautioned Kenyans against travelling with large sums of money.
