Ruto Offers to Help Resolve Niger Conflict Following Coup

President William Ruto has expressed his willingness to assist Niger in resolving the conflict following a coup that resulted in the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum. 

Ruto has criticized the coup as an undemocratic act and has called for the immediate release of President Bazoum who is reportedly being held captive by the Presidential Guard. The United Nations has suspended its humanitarian operations in Niger, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of President Bazoum. Niger's democratically elected president has been deposed by the very people who were supposed to protect his office. Ruto has urged the orchestrators of the coup to restore the constitutional rule of the country by releasing the President.

"Kenya joins the rest of the world to condemn, in the strongest terms, this unconstitutional act that subverts democracy through a coup-de-tat and calls for the immediate release of President Bazoum who is reportedly seized by members of the Presidential Guard. Kenya is willing to assist in resolving the conflict under the auspice of the Africa Union should it be deemed appropriate," Ruto said. 

Niger, a country in the Sahel region of Africa, has experienced a military coup, suspending the country's constitution and installing a new leader, Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani. Western nations had looked to Niger as a key partner in stabilizing the region and fighting against Islamist insurgents. As the largest country in West Africa, Niger plays a significant role politically, economically, and strategically. It has been seen as a relatively stable democracy in recent years and is home to French and US military bases. Additionally, Niger is a major producer of uranium, accounting for 7% of global supplies.

Niger's economy is heavily reliant on metal with the Avenue de l'Uranium in the capital city of Niamey serving as a testament to this fact. Unfortunately, despite this dependence, the people of Niger continue to experience some of the lowest standards of living in the world.
