Kenyan National Among Victims in Tragic Canada Mass Shooting

On the morning of November 26, 2023, tragedy struck in a West Broadway home in Canada where Kenyan student Melelek Leseri Lesikel lost his life in a mass shooting.

The 29-year-old was studying Biology at the University of Manitoba. At around 4 a.m. emergency services were alerted of an unfortunate event at 143 Langside. The mass shooting had claimed the lives of Lesikel and three others while leaving one more in critical condition. Responding swiftly, the Winnipeg Police arrived at the scene to find five wounded individuals. Without delay, they commenced their rescue efforts, but tragically, two victims were declared dead at the scene.

The remaining three were promptly transported to the hospital for urgent medical attention. Regrettably, one of them succumbed to injuries during treatment, while another met his demise on November 27, 2023, resulting in a total of four fatalities. The individual in critical condition is presently being closely monitored for any signs of progress. Before this disheartening discovery, Melelek Lesikel had been reported missing for several months.

Lesikel was reported as missing before his eventual discovery as deceased. His former roommate confirmed to the Free Press Canada that their last conversation occurred 10 months ago. The President of the Kenya Association of Manitoba Pamela Obonde has verified that the deceased has a brother residing in the United States and a family back in Kenya.

On the other hand, Sam Aguko, the former president of the association, mentions that he had last spoken to the deceased's mother approximately two years ago during his tenure as the community's leader. During one period of Lesikel's disappearance, his mother contacted Aguko in an attempt to locate and bring him home. The search party, responsible for reuniting mother and son, was recently shocked to discover that he had vanished once again.

Court records reviewed by the Free Press indicate that Lesikel had no criminal history that would necessitate involving the police in the search.
As of November 29, 2023, no suspects related to the shooting have been apprehended by the Winnipeg police.

Since the report indicates a history of "disappearances", this young man had clinical issues or just kept bad company. At any rate, condolences to his loved ones and friends.

It's possible he didn't wish to be contacted rather than any illness. WaKenya nyumbani na hapa magharibi wanaweza kumsumbua mtu na maombi mengi yasioisha na mwishowe anachagua kutowasiliana. There was a point when I lived in the DMV when the local Kenyans had an association that constantly asked for funds for all these people and causes I didn't know. I was young and quite broke so rather than say no I made myself very rare and hard to find. Absence may not make the heart grow fonder but it will save you a lot of money.

@mugo! Very true! I am about to go underground and let no body help in searching for me if he/she gets the request from Kenya! I got to think about my own future before it is ruined by the beggars back home!

The rags allege that it was a drug fueled situation. First, the shot folks were not known to the landlord of the low income housing. The ladies involved were members of the First Nation i.e Red Indians or Native people. While I do not know the details of this particular situation, drugs and alcohol remain a big problem among natives. They were sent off to reservations and left to wallow in drink and heroin/cocaine. Tobacco is sacred to them, so they will chew or snuff it whether the govt agrees or not. It is the drugs and alcohol that have colonized the reservations.

It is heartbreaking to lose such a young soul and especially when one is out of the country. A very trying moment for the family. May God touch and comfort everyone's heart at this most tragic moment. I am lost for words. Sometimes life doesn't make sense. There is so much hurt in this world. What can we do?

Let us pray for the family. This Is tragic loss of a life that could may have inspired and impacted many.

The fact that he had dissappeared for many months is a clear indication his life circumstances was not all that smooth sailing.

Parents in Kenya send their children abroad in hope of a better life circumstances but such a vase is a stark remimder of why these assumptions are sometimes far fetched and far from the reality.
