Kenyans Turn to Creative Valentine Cash Gifts Following CBK Warning

Kenyans are adapting Valentine’s Day cash gifts to comply with new Central Bank of Kenya rules that prohibit the folding, stapling or decoration of banknotes.

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has issued a directive warning that mishandling currency damages banknotes and makes them unsuitable for circulation. The guidance directly affects the popular practice of presenting money as decorative bouquets, which has gained prominence in recent years as a romantic gifting option.

Instead of abandoning the trend, many Kenyans have redesigned it. Social media platforms, particularly TikTok, feature videos showing alternative methods that preserve the presentation of cash while keeping notes intact and undamaged.

One widely shared video shows Sh200 notes placed inside transparent protective sleeves. Each sleeve is accompanied by a label listing a reason for affection, such as “Reason 1: You are generous,” combining personal messages with financial gifts.

Another clip highlights a commercial design involving a red gift box decorated with hearts. The box opens into several compartments holding Sh1,000 notes, with a smaller box at the centre that reveals additional layers when opened.

Many users have praised the creativity involved, while others have responded with humour, making light of the regulatory restrictions and the growing commercialisation of romantic gestures. Some commentators have also raised practical questions about costs. Sellers have quoted prices such as Sh3,950 for packaging a Sh30,000 cash arrangement.

Others asked whether the decorative boxes could be sold without money, with some vendors saying that the packaging is only available as part of a complete cash gift.
