Body of Senator Mandago’s Mother Moved Home Ahead of Tuesday Burial

The body of Mama Esther Tapsiarga Lelei, mother of Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago, was transferred from Eldoret hospital mortuary to the family home on Sunday ahead of her burial on Tuesday.

Hundreds of residents gathered at the hospital as the body was released, with Senator Mandago and his father, Mzee Daniel Kirorei Lelei, leading mourners during the brief ceremony. The procession later moved to the family home as part of the final rites.

Speaking at the morgue, Mzee Lelei paid tribute to his wife, describing her as his pillar and thanking medical staff for their care during her illness. He also expressed appreciation to neighbours, friends and religious leaders for their support during the family’s time of grief.

Senator Mandago described his mother as a mentor and source of strength, saying she played a central role in guiding the family and others in the community. He thanked God for her long life and the time they shared. Mama Esther died on 29 January at the age of 92.

Religious leaders from Christian and Muslim communities offered prayers before the body was transported, while several political leaders visited the family to convey condolences. Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii described Mama Esther as compassionate and resilient, while MPs David Kiplagat and Julius Rutto spoke of her influence as a parent and guide.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and other regional leaders were also present, reflecting broad support for the family. Leaders from different political affiliations attended, with the gatherings marked by shared condolences rather than political engagement.

President William Ruto is expected to attend the burial at the family’s Sigen farm near Kuinet, though his presence has not been formally confirmed.
