Three Kenyans Die in Separate Incidents Across Australia Within a Week

Three members of the Kenyan community in Australia have died in separate incidents over just more than a week, with the cases reported in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia.

The most recent death involved Dennis Kiprono, a young man from Uasin Gishu County who drowned at Werri Beach near Sydney on 15 March. Kiprono had arrived in Australia five months ago and had gone swimming with friends during a weekend outing when strong tides pulled him into the sea.

Efforts to rescue him were unsuccessful. His death has deeply affected members of the Kenyan community in Sydney, who have begun raising funds to repatriate his body to Kenya for burial.

Earlier, on 12 March, John Munga died suddenly in Victoria. Munga was a member of Watu wa West, a social group that connects Kenyans living in the region. His death has left friends and relatives grieving. His family has asked for privacy while they make funeral arrangements, which will be shared at a later date.

In Western Australia, the family of Peter Nyakundi Maragia, known as “Kundi”, is mourning his death on 7 March. Maragia previously worked with NTV before relocating to Australia. Friends and family have described him as a lively and well-liked figure within the community.

His family has started fundraising to meet funeral costs estimated at KSh 2 million. Contributions have been received from supporters in both Australia and Kenya. Planned events include a fundraiser in Nairobi, followed by a church service and burial at his father’s home in Nyansiongo Settlement Scheme.

The three deaths in close succession have affected Kenyan communities across Australia. Community groups have organised financial support, emotional assistance and practical help for the families involved.

In Kenya, a separate incident has also caused widespread grief. On 15 March, Nairobi biker Gustavo Rides died in a crash along the Northern Bypass. Earlier that day, he had posted a message on social media saying he was “alive and kicking”.
