American firm Bechtel International is set to begin construction work on Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway at the end of this year.
Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) Communication director Charles Njogu on Thursday said that feasibility studies and designs of the superhighway are complete.
Bechtel International, the largest construction and civil engineering company in the United States and based in San Fransisco, California, will build the four-lane highway at a cost Sh230 billion.
“The 473 km express highway will allow uninterrupted speeds of 120 km/h, cutting travel time from 10 to four hours,” Njogu said by phone.
"This is a completely new roadway that will take up a lot of money because farmers whose land will be used will be compensated," he added.
The mega project will be funded by US Export Credit Agencies, including the US Export-Import Bank and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation and is expected to be completed in six years.

This is one of Godec's Reason for Staying Mum on Political Turmoil in Kenya.
Nasariots used to run to Godec...US... ati kushitaki sisi. Hehehe, mufira niuragarurukanirwo....vivindu vichangeanga kangali!
It's all about economics - hio ingine ni kelele. Its called money and power , the rest is side show ... But Taanzania and North Korea are open for immigration for those who think differently
Kazi Iendelee! For 24 years when Raila was the MP for Langa’ta, he did not dig a single latrine pit for his worshippers in Kibera. No wonder Raila gets agitated whenever he sees others producing results. In December 2017, I was an eye witness of the new developments taking place on the Mombasa highway.
Kazi iendelee ya kujenga Kenya yetu. There will be a great need of Benadryl for those allergic to development.
Kazi eindelee. Quite a humor on the Benadryl.
Lol this Benadryl humour funny

Good work govt of kenya - And somehow, the governor of Mombasa is the biggest govt critic - shaitani ashindwe
I thought they would be busy by the lake getting ready to secede. Where is Doreen to she'd light on how far they have gone. Uhuru, not a single tarmac at the lake so when they secede tax payers won't be left with a hefty bill. Nyang'au ici ona wira ndungirutika. Kazi iendelee!
Joho is already opposing the project, those fast cars and buses will get business out of Mombasa.
Honestly, can we not evaluate this objectively without Raila et al being thrown into the mix. Is it advantageous to the road completed and will it justify the 230bn being used - ie can we recover the money from the road in the future?
Great Initiative but can't Kenyan experts go an extra mile and learn how to handle such mega-projects? The governmeny should invest more in its experts. That money should gravitate back to the country. Too many contracts going to overseas firms makes me wonder what really can the government do for itself. #justthinking.
