A new report released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has ranked the richest and poorest counties in Kenya.
In the report, Nairobi has been ranked as the county with the lowest share of poor population, with only 17 people in every 100 living in poverty. Following closely is Nyeri and Meru with 19 each, while Kirinyaga (22) and Narok (23) close the list of top five richest counties.
In the counties of Kiambu and Machakos, 23 in every 100 residents are poor, while Tharaka-Nithi, Murang’a and Mombasa make it to the ten rich list with 24,25 and 27 persons in 100 struggling with life respectively.
On the other hand, Turkana was named the poorest county, with more than 79 in every 100 of its residents living in poverty. Mandera (78), Samburu (76), Busia (69) and Garissa (66) close the list of top five poorest counties.
Marsabit (63.7), Wajir (62.6), Tana River (62.6), West Pokot (57.4) and Isiolo (51.9) also fall in the 10 poorest counties, with residents struggling to meet basic needs.
Kenya National Bureau of Statistic's report defines households living in poverty as ones earning a monthly salary of less than Sh3,252 in rural areas and Sh5,995 per month in major urban centres.
The report further indicates that 16.4 million Kenyans lived in poverty in the year ended June 2016, a significant drop from 16.6 million persons 10 years ago.
“The overall national poverty headcount rate (proportion of poor individuals) dropped from 46.6 per cent in 2005/06 to 36.1 per cent in 2015/16,” the KNBS survey based on feedback from 24,000 households established.

So according to this report if one lives in naitobi and make a a
sh 5995 is considered not poor, I know that that amount can not pay rent, utilities transport and food for a month. The cutline used here is so low. The living standards are much above what you guys quote.
Uwongo! This is not an accurate or rather a scientific study. Kenya's government is broke, the Treasury is broke, where did these people get the money and resources to carry out such a study? How did you factor in the jobless, those who get paid cash, those who've worked for months like and have not been paid? This is nonsense.
that study is bogus, I have never been contacted for such! u can't talk of poverty on county levels, let the issues pertaining to individuals handled singly by each! consider joblessness in Kenya and petty salary for the employed, 70% of Kenyans r poor! 5665 can't pay the family rent anywhere
They say the national head count poverty rate fell from 46.6% to 36.1 % with 24,000 households surveyed.I wonder what guidelines they used to conduct the survey.Different results will be achieved depending on how and where the survey is done.
the survey is not true 70percent are poor people, let the survey be done again
This data compares period 2006 - 2016 therefore already stale by about 2 years. Using yesterday's data today to make decisions for tomorrow will lead to poor results.KNBS should use robust and innovative tools to generate real-time or not more than 3 month old data.
According to the statistics if i stay in Nairobi and earn less 5000/= am considered rich??? poor stats
What is the government doing about this, considering the fact that we are approaching our millenium threshold and vision 2030.
This survey is poorly conducted. Any survey done with an aim of unearthing poverty indices should first examine counties' significant resource endowment, levels of major economic problems such as unemployment, effects of inflationary pressures among others. If the tools for research are poor, then, we are far from achieving reliable and valid results. I will simply term this as trash.
this is ambiguous research, where do you rank counties like kajiado
False biased report.most Kenyans struggle to meet thr basic wants Politics was the key interference in a bove report, they talkd of 5k considered rich in major towns .Frankly 5k is not amount to equalise the needs of A Kenyan in Nairobi.
The report indicated 16.4 million versus 16.6 million is a SIGNIFICANT DROP. Lord have mercy on us.
