Nairobi's popular curio market, Maasai market located opposite Sarit Center in Westlands has been demolished.
The famous market was brought down under heavy police presence on Thursday morning in anticipation of protests by stall owners.
Reports indicate that the market was demolished by Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) to pave way for the expansion of Lower Kabete and Peponi roads.
Speaking to journalists at the scene, Henry Kadogo, who is the secretary general of the Westlands Market said the demotion was done against an order by the court blocking the move.
“We were ejected from the main market by the Government for a formal one to be constructed so that we can move in. But it has delayed for several years. There is a court order blocking the demolition of the market but the Government has disobeyed it.
“If the Government is not able to complete the construction of the market, we will get in and complete it ourselves,” secretary general of the Westlands Market Henry Kadogo.
Maasai market is famous for its curio products that attract both local and foreign visitors.
