The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has been named the best airport facility in Africa and 38th globally in new ranking.
The latest ranking used quality of service, on-time performance and passenger experience to rank airports across the world.
AirHelp Score rankings examined data from December 22nd, 2017, to March 20th, 2018 and factored in delayed and canceled flights, public reviews from trusted sources and social media sentiments.
The Kenya's largest airport facility scored highly, beating its African peers and a number of globally highly rated airports.
“JKIA airport has earned its position as a key aviation hub for the region and indeed the continent. Being the main gateway to the country, continuous improvement of service standards will aid our success in reclaiming our position as the premier tourist destination on the continent,” Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) managing director Jonny Andersen said.
AirHelp, which conducted the survey, is a global technology firm established in 2013 and provides legal services to passengers who have experienced a flight cancellation, delay or overbooking when traveling into or out of the European Union. The company launched the ranking system in 2015.
In the new rankings, JKIA scored an overall 7.9 per cent out of 10; 8.3 on-time performance, quality of service (7.2) and 9.3 on passenger sentiments, an improvement from previous ranking a year earlier.
In last year's rankings, JKIA scored an overall performance of 7.1 per cent; 7.6 on-time performance, 6.0 per cent on quality of service, and 9.2 per cent on passenger sentiments.
Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa Airport, which was ranked first in Africa and 26th worldwide last year, is missing from this year’s list.
Other continent’s largest and busiest airports missing from the latest list include; OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg (South Africa), and Cairo International Airport, Cape Town, Casablanca (Morocco), and Murtala Muhammed in Lagos.
World-class airports such as Billund in Denmark at position 39, Porto Alegre, Brazil (40), Zurich, Switzerland (41), Gdansk, Poland (42), Gran Canaria, Spain (43), Amsterdam, Netherlands (44), and San Francisco, USA (45) are trailing JKIA.
Hamad international airport, Doha in Qatar, was ranked number one with an overall score of 8.7, followed by Athens, Greece (8.69), Haneda, Tokyo (8.63), Cologne Bonn, Germany (8.6), and Singapore Changi (8.4).

JKIA am not boarding..where is my luggage Where is my passport I did not book this flight the captain cannot fly..nice chorus for a song writer eti watiata..Number one in Africa Maheni. Twende kazi prior to direct flights.. hope sio pesa ya NYS ilifanya kazi hapa. Kusema tu..na sio kwa ubaya
Was there on March. Although clearance has improved a bit. Employees requesting bribes'kitu kidogo' still a problem. Otherwise, it's clean, less traffic and congestion.
Kudos JKIA! At least some good news away from corruption issues.
JKIA Airport need to come up with a system that allows good dropping and picking of passengers without any harassment from the police
I beg to differ. Terminal 1B/c etc are still old and dilapidated the non KQ arrivals hall has no air con and very dirty...people need to traveland are what other airports are like... Jkia is still analogue
This is a joke. Was there in December and experience was harrowing.
