Kenya is participating in a two-day international conference in Cape Verde to discuss the future of the global diaspora.
The two-day event focuses on engaging the global diaspora, particularly its younger members, in fostering worldwide change and aligning with the principles of the Dublin Declaration. Adopted in 2022, the Dublin Declaration on Global Citizenship Education marks two decades since the Maastricht Congress and Declaration. This milestone has brought together diverse stakeholders in education for social change, aiming to dismantle barriers to cooperation in development education, human rights education, and education for sustainable development. The Declaration commits European governments to bolster global citizenship education and empower citizens to understand their role in creating a better world.
A key highlight of the conference is the inauguration of the Global Diaspora Policy Alliance (GDPA). This platform is designed to foster collaboration across governments and stakeholders, serving as a cornerstone for future global diaspora engagement initiatives. The GDPA will complement existing regional and continental platforms, prioritizing diaspora involvement in global development policy frameworks. Its focus areas include Gender and Youth, Climate Action, and Health and Well-being, with the ultimate goal of accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The event has attracted notable figures including the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, H.E Mr. José Ulisses Correia e Silva, and the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Ms. Amy E. Pope. Kenya's delegation is led by Secretary-Diaspora Welfare and Partnerships Amb. Hellen Gichuhi representing Diaspora Affairs PS Roseline Kathure Njogu. The Kenyan contingent also includes representatives from diaspora associations and foreign service officials. The conference aims to address both challenges and opportunities faced by the global diaspora in contributing to sustainable development.
Discussions will explore ways to mobilize the youthful diaspora to drive social, economic, and environmental change, with a particular focus on the role of technology and innovation in enhancing diaspora engagement. In addition to the GDPA launch, the conference features various panel discussions, workshops, and networking sessions. These provide a platform for participants to exchange best practices, experiences, and strategies for effective diaspora engagement. The event also showcases successful diaspora initiatives that have significantly contributed to global development.
