China Offers Academic Scholarships to 150 Kenyan Students

The Chinese government has offered academic scholarships to more than 150 Kenyan students in an exchange program that will equip them with skill in different fields.

Speaking during a farewell reception of the students departing to China, Commission for University Education Chairman Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha lauded the program, saying that it was an opportunity for Kenya to benchmark itself with other foreign countries. He said the program could foster both infrastructural development and economic growth.

“I want to thank the Government of China for this sponsorship this is because it will enhance the resource capacity in our country. I appreciate how China has been friends with Kenya because this has expanded the empowerment of people of Kenyan as far economic development and infrastructure is concerned,” Chacha said.

Beneficiary students expressed optimism that the program would equip them with skills that will enable them bring change and new ideas to help Kenya realize growth.

“I am going to pursue International Economics this is a great privilege and am proud to be selected to study in china I will bench-marking to know why China is growing economically,” said Masimbo Dennis from Kenyatta University.

“This is my first time to board a plane and am very excited. I will be pursuing railway engineering,” said Martin Bundotich from University of Eldoret.

Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Liu Xianfa said both Kenya and China stand to benefit from the sponsorship offered to students, adding that China-Kenya bilateral relations have turned to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation Partnership.

“China-Kenya friendship has a long history; in recent years, the relationship has witnessed rapid development which has seen China become Kenya’s greatest trading partner. Mutual political trust has grown to another level,” said Liu Xianfa.
