Al Shabaab Militants Set Ablaze Two Police Camps in Garissa

Suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked and set ablaze Ijara Police Station and an Administration Police camp in Garissa County on Saturday morning.

The about 50 attackers escaped with a police Land Cruiser vehicle and brought down a Safaricom communication mast using a rocket-propelled grenade.

Confirming the 2.15 am attack, a police officer who sought anonymity said the assailants also looted a shop at Ijara shopping centre before burning it.

"We have those who have been injured. We are yet to know how many as the incident happened past midnight," said the officer.

Police officers exchange fire with the attackers for about 20 minutes before they vanished. All the 40 police officers present at the camp at the time of the attack have been accounted for.

“We have officers tracking them with the help of the military because we need to get the police vehicle back,” another officer said.

“They destroyed property but luckily there is no casualty, but we suspect some of them must have escaped with injuries after a shootout with police."
