Opposition MPs Plan Impeachment Motion against Interior CS Fred Matiang'i

A section of opposition MPs are working on an impeachment motion against three top government officers.

10 MPs affiliated to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) say they are planning to table an ouster motion against Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, former Immigration boss Gordon Kihalangwa and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet.

The MPs, led by Alego Usonga's Samuel Atandi, say the trio is not fit hold public offices after ignoring several court orders directing for the release of lawyer Miguna Miguna.

"We cannot have law breakers in security dockets and expect them to maintain law and order. They better leave before we force them to leave," he said on Saturday.

Speaking during a fundraiser at Nyasita Secondary School in Siaya, the MPs said that the three should be taught that no one is above the law. Saboti MP Caleb Khamisi said they will ensure that Matiang'i, Boinnet and Kihalangwa are held accountable for their actions.

"The Sh200,000 fine by the court will be implemented before we orchestrate their ouster," he said.

"We will not fear them as we are not the kind of leaders who are ready to bend the law for personal gain."

Nominated MP Godfrey Osotsi advised the three to resign before they pursue them. ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna accused Matiang'i of being an impediment to the unity efforts by President Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga.

"But we warn that he will go home before materialising his bad intentions," Sifuna said, and urged MPs to use their powers to "trim Matiang'i's rogue branches before they get out of hand".

"Everyone must respect the law. What Matiang'i and Boinnet are doing is setting a bad precedent - disregard for the rule of law," Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch  said.

In a ruling on Thursday, High Court Justice George Odunga ordered the three to pay Sh200,000 fine each for contempt of court.
