Governor Mike Sonko Suspends 'Lazy' Nairobi Health Minister

Two days after sending home three top City Hall officials over corruption, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has suspended Health Executive Hitan Majevdia and County Health Director Thomas Ogaro.

Sonko accused the two of laxity in their work and gave them 14 days to explain the lack of medicine and poor services in county health facilities.

"The Governor has suspended Health Executive Member Majevdia Hitan and County Health Director Thomas Ogaro over laxity. [He] gives them 14 days to explain why Nairobi County medical facilities have poor services and lack medicines," Sonko said in a statement released by Nairobi Director of Communications Elkana Jacob on Wednesday.

On Monday, Sonko sent home Chief of Staff Brian Mugo, acting Chief Finance Officer Ekaya Alumasi and acting head of County Treasury Stephen Mutua over alleged misuse of public funds.

Sonko further requested the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to immediately commence investigations against the three.

“There was an intelligence report showing they had misused county resources. Internal investigations have implicated them,” said a communication from the Governor’s office.
