American fast food restaurant chain Burger King is on the spot following its latest statement on chicken and beef products served in the Kenyan market.
In a statement, the Miami-headquartered company says it will continue to sell chicken and beef laced with antibiotics in Kenya.
This is despite pledging to adopt a policy of sourcing food products that are free from antibiotics for the United States and Canadian markets.
“These Restaurants Brands International commitments relate exclusively to the markets of the US and Canada. Kenya is not concerned,” says Samuel Coulon, communications officer at Servair which has a franchise agreement to operate Burger King Stores in Kenya.
The announcement has angered Kenyans who have taken to social media to call for a boycott of Burger King food.
Overuse of antibiotics in livestock can cause resistant bacteria to spread, placing meat consumers at risk of developing life-threatening infections.
Burger King currently has four outlets in Nairobi located at The Hub Mall in Karen, Thika Road Mall, Nextgen Mall along Mombasa Road, and Two Rivers Mall.
Here are some reactions from Kenyans online;
@Ciiru notes: “WHY would we allow this brand in Kenya ??@BurgerKing do you have no shame? Not good enough for the US & Canada so let’s give #Kenya the antibiotics in chicken & let them deal with the catastrophic effects?"
"Kenyans pls take note and make your call on Burger King Kenya. Kings of double-dealing,” Crime Watch Nairobi says.
“#BoycottBurgerKing ... simple and clear ... or ingest antibiotics from their chicken and develop irreversible resistance to all medication. Inform your loved ones to avoid @BurgerKing ,” Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK) advises.

Why are Kenyans suddenly angry, don't we worship anything American? The last time I was there, I noted all Mombasa road corridor is filled with those Junk franchises - pizza hut, burgerking, Domino etc.Instead of fuming online ( wasted time and energy) promote Kenyan eateries and drive these cronies out of town nkt!
Welcome to the world where the Hebrew Israelites or the so called "blacks" are treated like they are called "shit-hole" countries. It's time to know that nobody cares about you other than the care you take of yourselves and your loved ones. What type of service do you expect from those who lied about your identity, maimed, robbed, raped, castrated, sodomized, hanged and killed your forefathers. What are they up to today. In the West they put huge signs about the effects on a human's body of the food they serve. These may soon prove to be our poisoning centers.
During colonialism, they were killing our forefathers so they can take their resources and they are not done yet only the methods have changed. Inform your loved ones. " My people die for lack of knowledge "
On a rather serious note, which one amongst you hasn’t lost a friend, a relative, a fellow villager or someone you knew to cancer? Cancer is on the loose in Kenya today, killing far more people than all other diseases. Catching up are lifestyle diseases - heart disease, diabetes topping the list. Each one of us needs to think long and hard about the stuff we ingest every day. It pays to go back to our traditional saaga, kunde, rabuon / ngwaci, etc. Too many factors are converging to ensure ill health in our lives - more sedentary lifestyles with less physical exertion, more cars everywhere, more fast food eateries with questionable nutritional menus (like BGRKNG) & disease agents that are mutating at very fast rates. It’s all up to you, as an individual
I now get it why cancer is rampart in this country. Indeed Africa is a shit hole continent.
Education is the only thing that will help us. We have to go back to our roots and the government has a role to play in food safety. Those junky fast foods oh gosh and people really line up for pizza. Men beginning to grow big breasts and hips. 50% of women in central province are overweight. 30-40% in Nyanza overweight. Kids in upper and middle income houses overweight. Hypertension and Diabetes everywhere. Booming business is dialysis as customers bankrupt their families before checking out to see their maker. Parts of Turkana, most are underweight.
@Mugikuyu, it's not just any education. We as a people must work very hard to do research for our family and friends and help each other. Wake up to who we really are. No one was created to provide for another for ever and no one was created to be provided for, for ever. At some point we must start believing and doing for ourselves. We must say NO to anything that tends to create dependency for us and thereby creating power for foreigners and especially colonizers.
Americans r dying right n left from cancer. For the last 6 months we counted about 12 kenyans who died of cancer leaving from different states.Cancer is more rampant in usa than kenya my freds but it's not about competing which pple dying most.Revolution is coming n we the kenyans will have no choice but to lead ourselves by eliminating corruption idiots n going for such burgers king n shutting them down. Its called the pples power which succeed the constitution.
Secondary colonisation of the African mind! The Kenyans worship everything American. One walks through the streets of Nairobi and it is appalling to see obese kids with equally obese parents (American sizes) munching away at these joints. Not sure if it ignorance or to them it is a sign that they made it. Whatever it is, it is killing our people and draining ill found resources (health care) in Kenya. I for one never eats in these joints although I am right in the midst of them. I prefer my ugali na Sukuma wiki readily available courtesy of globalisation! Akili ni nywele kila mtu anazake. I predict in 10 years time, we shall see Americanisation in full swing and bearing fruit with names such as Tanisha, etc the norm. Wakosa mila ni watumwa and we have stepped right into this trap!
SAY NO TO BURGER KING IF NOT USING HOME GROWN PRODUCTS . BUT this has to do with our government allowing it happen
I don't understand the hue and cry. The whole thing is simple and straightforward. The US government, through the Food and Drugs Administration, requires that no antibiotics be used, when raising animals for human consumption in the US. There is no such requirement, from the Kenyan government, so Burger King is breaking no law in Kenya. Kenyans should be directing their anger towards the Ministry of Health, or Parliament. They are the ones charged with making laws to ensure that what is sold to Kenyans is fit for human consumption.
What’s the big deal, people? Why should you be eating garbage in the first place? The solution is so simple - DECIDE to never partake of anything in a Burger King outlet!
