Students from Kenya's Strathmore University Beat their Harvard Counterparts in Global Law Competition

Students from Kenya’s Strathmore University School of Law became the first African team to win the John H. Jackson Moot Court on World Trade Organization (WTO) Law.

The team of three students, namely Mishael Wambua, Kandalla Maleehah, and Catherine Penda, made history after beating Harvard Law School in the final of the competition held in Geneva, Switzerland on Saturday.

This was the 17th edition of the global John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition, formerly known as the European Law Students Association Moot Court Competition on WTO Law.

“Strathmore met Harvard in the final of the 17th John H. Jackson Moot Court on WTO Law in Geneva. It was the 1st time an African team made it to the finals. Strathmore Law won the Moot! 🙏🏽 Congrats great team! Kenya!” Luis Franceschi, the Dean Strathmore Law School said in a tweet.

During the competition, participants are required to prepare and analyze a fictive case and present their arguments both for the Complainant and the Respondent in front of a panel which comprises of WTO and trade law experts.

This year, students from 90 Law Schools across the continent took part.

The competition opens on September every year with the release of the case, followed by regional rounds in Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa, and the Americas.

The best 20 teams worldwide of the individual rounds qualify to participate in the Final Oral Round, which is held in Geneva.

Your comment is ignorant and stupid. Colonials did many things poorly but Kenya's high state of corruption is all its own and it is an AFRICAN problem that has little or nothing to do with Colonialism. If you are going to comment you should at least know how to spell the word COLONIALISM!

You are the ignorant (and arrogant) one here. No one is denying the existence of corruption in Africa. Read and understand history, and get to grips with the fact that mega-corruption in Africa is hugely supported by the West and China.

Yeah....sometimes we should not blame the Europeans because of the problems we are facing as a continent.. we need to develop our own independent development programmes otherwise Africa will always remain poor..It is paradoxical that Africa is rich in terms of resources but economically it remains poorer but this can only be understood by critically analysing the relationship between Africa and European nations and you will agree that it is exploitative in nature...we need as a continent always to realize the preferences of our allies...arise!!!! Africa

Bad news is good news. If the team had misbehaved or done something criminal it would be the headline in all major world news orgs. It would be reenforcing the stereotype. Ie, shit hole countries.
Strathmore team defied the stereotype and showed them they are not better than an African child given the same opportunity to succeed. Congratulations team. I'll stand a little taller today.

Hongera wana Strathmore.

Great stuff Strathmore. Real proud to be associated with this humble, decent and focussed institution of learning. I Always argue Strathmore is the Harvard campus in Nairobi.

Your brother and sisters back home have expressed their felicitation on your exemplary performance.

Point has been proved, you need not to go to Harvard to be the best but ,concentrate fully on your academics irrespective of the institution your come from.
