Kenyan Woman, 32, Arrested over Murder of Her 78-Year-Old German Lover

A 32-year-old Kenyan woman suspected of killing her 78-year-old German lover has been arrested.

The suspect, identified as Mary Mwikali Kavuu, was arrested on Thursday evening by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide unit in Diani, Kwale County.

The German man named Detering Herman is said to have arrived at Moriema Cottages in Malindi, Kilifi County together with his alleged girlfriend on Monday night and the two went to his room.

Herman’s lifeless body was discovered by the hotel’s staff on Tuesday evening after they got suspicious following his failure to show up for breakfast and lunch as was his routine.

Moreima Cottages receptionist Kelly Kazungu said Herman’s body was lying in a pool of blood while his body had stab wounds on the head and stomach.

“The two seemed happy and went to bed together late at night. We never suspected anything fishy until in the evening when one of the workers peeped through the window after he failed to show up and saw him dead,” said Kazungu.

Detectives will be looking to establish the motive behind the killing of the septuagenarian and to see if they will recover the murder weapon, according to coast region DCI head Washington Njiru.

Herman had stayed in the hotel since December 4th, 2019, Malindi Sub-County Police Commander Vitalis Otieno said. The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court next week.
