'My Monthly Salary is Less Than Sh10,000:' Senator Murkomen Says No to Pay Cut

Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has explained why most MPs are not willing to take a pay cut.

To free up funds for fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, President Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto slashed their salaries by 80 percent.

Other members of the Executive arm of the government including CSs, CASs, and PSs had their monthly pay trimmed by between 20 and 30 percent.

President Uhuru urged members of the other two arms of the government namely the Judiciary and the Legislature to also contribute to the Covid-19 kitty by taking pay cuts.

The Chief Justice and Speakers of the Senate and National Assembly have since agreed to have their salaries reduced by 30 percent but MPs have been reluctant to take pay cuts.

In an interview with Citizen TV on Tuesday night, Senator Murkomen said a majority of MPs are unable to contribute money towards fighting the pandemic because a huge share of their salaries go into paying back mortgages and loans.

Murkomen, who is also the leader of majority in the Senate, added that after deductions, most MPs pocket less than Sh10,000, including himself.

“Many members of Parliament, when they join parliament, commit all their salaries to mortgages and loans and so whatever they take home at the moment is less than Sh10,000 for most of them; some don’t even get anything. Many of you never understand," said Murkomen.

"I had a discussion with the Parliamentary Service Commission and I want to disclose this publicly. My salary is less than Sh10,000 so I told myself that it would not be beneficial for me to contribute Sh5,000 or so,” he added.

“I'll give my personal donation from my other incomes like farming, which will be better than say a 30 percent deduction from my 10k."

What is it we do not understand? That you live beyond your means at the cost of tax payers? If your salary is paying loans where are you getting daily maintenance money... oh from dams, nys and the likes

I think it is that Kenyan disease of wanting to be seen as living large. The 20 million loan they are granted at 3% and backed by serikali could easily afford them 2 homes in Ngong, 1 for living and 1 to rent out. They can pay this off in record time. This particular mjinga makes over $10000 a month before allowances. How he ends up with $100 seems like he needs money management classes. Since you appear to have a mpango that appears to work for you, you should set up a business to help these fools. Just remind them its not what you make it's what you keep.

You have said it better than I could put it! These thieves have to be forced to take a 101 dummy class on money management. For a man of this guy’s caliber to go on TV to talk sh$t is quite unbelievable indeed. Murkomen and the MPs should also take a class on peer pressure and bigger than life syndrome management. No wonder everyone who loses an election end up committing suicide for lack of coping skills back into the real life!!

This guy is senate majority leader which means he get paid extra for that position. He also have allowances and that is where those mps make more money which sometimes exceed their salary. She should know Kenyans are not stupid and they understand all those payments. My fellow Kenyans please know that when you see mps on the media talking it's all about them. Very selfish.

10K? Any Mpigs getting 10K per month after deduction is a fool and does not deserve to be in parliament. These are people who party like idiots on steroid in high end restaurants & hotels. They get over a million per month.

The politicians who live above and beyond their means ought to be jailed.

Their exorbitant spending of money they don’t have leads them into corruption and stealing public funds.

For Murkomen to tell us that we don’t understand the bulksh$t he is talking about is a major insult to our intelligence.

Murkomen, 99% of working Kenyans earn a 1/4 of your damn 10,000 shillings you are lying that you end up with at the end of every month! Your fuzzy math here does not add up!

I am surprised that your Kikuyu wife allows you to mismanage your pay as bad as you have stated. If you can’t step up to help when called upon by a national crisis, do you think Kenyans should refer to you as a “Senator”? I think not!!

Stop lying with a goofy smile in your stupid mouth! Kenyans are dying and you are acting like it ain’t a big deal!!! No one wants your damn money! So shave it in your freaking a&s and shut your smelly goat 🐐 mouth! Jesus Christ!!

kenyandamu (not verified)     Wed, 04/15/2020 @ 10:39pm

I agree his smile in that picture is disgusting when Kenyans are dying! they are selfish and cares about no one else but themselves!!!! 10k left over is a fk'n lie! again uhuru should take care of Kenyans with the money he bribing Kenyan celebrities/musicians with!!! ksh 100,000,000 is enough to take care of every Kenyan citizen period! whats the Kenyan population again? I think my maths is better than this senator's. here is what his leader said while a ddressing the Nation on the state of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country smfh....

“I direct the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage to avail Ksh.100M from the Sports Fund to our artistes, actors and musicians during the period of the covid-19 pandemic so they may continue to entertain their fellow brothers and sisters through TV, radio and the internet,” said Kenyatta.

Murkomens’s youthful ignorance is very perturbing as discusses the money tax payers pay him. Who ask this childish fool to take a pay cut to help others. These are well know lords of corruption who have stolen from ordinary Kenyans for the longest time. But when they are ask to help, they start talking some drunken carcass like mad dogs. If these are the folks waiting to lead Kenyans after 2022, May our dear God help all of us!!

Murkomen ni fala sana. He could have just kept quiet and nobody would have noticed he did not contribute. Lakini lazima ajaribu to make a point. Bure kabisa.

This man so devoid of looks is married .Maybe it is the teeth or obvious ramblings he does not appear to have anything upstairs apart from worshipping Arap Mashambs.

Sang (not verified)     Thu, 04/16/2020 @ 04:47am

Stop foolishly gleaning at the miseries ordinary Kenyans are experiencing during these difficult times. Your level of maturity is openly depicted by the clueless smarch in your ugly mouth. Rather you keep quiet instead of showing your foolishness on national media! Go away and get lost!

Serina (not verified)     Thu, 04/16/2020 @ 05:02am

What Murkomen have said here is treasonous at best. He is dropping his dirty trousers and bending over to “MOON” some frustrated Kenyans!!

We are all tired of Ruto and his childish men. The pandemic shows how selfish and self consumed they bustards are! They are in leadership for themselves and not to serve s; we the poeple! Hopefully, the voters of Elgeyo Marakweti are begging to see the useless leader who they voted for as a senator.

Murkomen, stop celebrating the bitter pains wananchi are going through. Stop talking because you have nothing important to say. You are full of purified dudu and it’s best you shut your mouth before we through that stinking dudu in your mouth.

Lori (not verified)     Fri, 04/17/2020 @ 04:25am

How much covid19 stipend is Murkomen who is below the poverty line receiving? He is also pushing for the MPs to be given shs 10,000 from the stipend since they are all now registered as poorer than the ordinary Kenyans.

Seroney (not verified)     Fri, 04/17/2020 @ 04:48am

As ugly as this man is, he sure can spin ugly lies to blind-side Kenyans over salary Kenyans pay him. He is the worst of all the looters of our coffers, even worse than DP Ruto! He is playing poverty monkey games because he thinks wananchi are stupid!

An ex-diaspora, an embarrassment to many. Just like Midiwo, the on-warrant former Washington DC resident, a former truck driver earning a paltry 30cts per mile, Wakenya ni wale wale tu. Given that govt job, you show out how almost all Kenyans are: thieves. I never said it, even former Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe could smell thief in us thousands of miles away. And something else, Kenyans are the most dishonest people, apart from Nigerians, that I have ever known. Just cough out that you want to buy anything to any Kenyan including your own father, brother, sister, cousin, uncle, aunt, friend, neighbor... oooo man, you just activated an unknown broker. Just look kina Raila and other Uhurus sychophants in their eyes. Hio ndio maendeleo.
