A Nigerian national accused of defrauding a US citizen of Sh17.6 million in a fake gold scam has been arraigned in a Nairobi court.
Yussuf Daniel Masara, alias Dr. Ibrahim, who was arrested on Wednesday night, was charged with obtaining money by false pretenses.
He is said to have obtained the money from the US national with a promise of selling him 50 kilograms of gold worth Sh17.6 million.
After failing to fulfill his promise, the US national, whose identity was not revealed, reported the matter at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) office in Kilimani, leading to the arrest of Masara.
The suspect denied the charge and was released on a Sh100,000 cash bail pending further investigations.
Milimani law courts Senior Resident Magistrate, Jane Kamau dismissed an application by police seeking to detain Masara for seven more days.
“I have considered the submissions by the state and the suspect and find that the role of the suspect in the investigations is minimal and l, therefore, decline to allow police request application and order the suspect be released on Sh100,000 with one contact person on condition he reports on a daily basis at DCIO Kilimani police station pending the probe,” ruled Kamau.
Police believe Masara is part of a wider criminal enterprise that has been conning unsuspecting victims.
