Three suspects believed to be part of a car theft syndicate were on Friday killed in a shootout with police in Ruiru, Kiambu County.

The three were part of a four-man armed gang that engaged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives in a fierce gun battle.

The officers embarked on a night patrol following numerous reports of stolen motor vehicles from parking yards and residential places in the area.

“30 minutes into the devil’s hour, the sleuths observed some suspicious activity by four men onboard a KBZ 113S Toyota Probox, just as it joined the murram road connecting Mwiki-Kasarani and Githurai 45 roads,” DCI says in a report.

The officers flagged down the vehicle for a security check but the suspects declined and opened fire at the cops as they sped off from the scene.

A fierce exchange of fire between the occupants of the car and police ensued, leading to the fatal shooting of three of the suspects while one managed to escape into the cover of darkness with gunshot wounds.

No officer was injured in the shootout that led to the recovery of a stolen vehicle.
