Three University Students Arrested After Obtaining Millions from Parents and Students in KCSE Leakage Scam

Three Egerton University students were on Monday arraigned in court for allegedly obtaining millions of shillings from parents and KCSE candidates in the pretext that they would sell them examination materials for the upcoming national examinations.
The three, who are based at the university’s main campus in Njoro, Nakuru County, were arrested following an investigation conducted by detectives from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) last week.
24-year-old Kelvin Anunda Mogaka, alias Prof Lenchodas, a fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Education Mathematics and Physics is said to be the mastermind of the syndicate, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Police said Mogaka, who lives large in a well-furnished apartment, had created two telegram groups with over 13,000 followers, where he is believed to have obtained millions of shillings from parents, who parted with between Sh5,000 to Sh20,000 to help their children cheat in the KCSE exam. The Telegram groups contained instructions on how the payments would be made with members being cautioned to strictly follow the procedure to save time.
He was lured into a trap by the detectives before leading them to his house in Njoro where they recovered six mobile phones, SIM cards, eight identity cards and ATM cards that the suspect had used to open fraudulent MPesa and bank accounts where the money would be deposited, DCI said.
In one such account at Equity Bank, Kisii branch, registered under his brother, about Sh2 million was flagged by detectives who also discovered that the suspect also operated a similar account at the Kisii KCB branch.
“When the detectives visited the homestead in Nyamusi, they confirmed that indeed the fourth-year student was not your usual varsity comrade but was in the process of putting up a modest house in the village, against all odds,” DCI said.
The suspect’s kin told detectives that Mogaka had earlier informed him that he hit the jackpot after a successful bet and would be sending him money to build a house for him at their home in Mosocho, Nyamira county.
The suspect led detectives to two other accomplices Francis Manyara Ogata alias Professor Ranchodas and Bravin Ombongi, both fourth-year students at Egerton University pursuing BA in Education, Maths and Geography courses.
The suspects appeared at Milimani law courts and were released on a Sh1 million bond or Sh500,000 with surety of the same amount.

Comrade Maxiley,
They are doing exactly what the top brass does. The only thing is only the small fish gets fried.
Think about it what are parents doing paying for these papers even if they were real?
But this is a global thing, aren't some folks going to jail in USA for similar reasons? Aren't Kenyan students milking it helping 1st world kids with homeworks and writing papers for them?
Comrade, it's just business.

I think Kenya has very bright and smart people. What's lacking is opportunities and ways to exploit people to their fullest potential. I condone what they did but circumstances force them to. Locking them up won't do any good.
