Indonesian Citizen Arrested With Ivory Worth Ksh10 Million At JKIA

An Indonesian citizen was apprehended by Kenyan security officers from the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) on Monday, October 9, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) under suspicion of engaging in wildlife trafficking.
The individual was discovered in possession of 38.4 kg of ivory, worth Sh10 million. During passenger screening at JKIA Terminal 1, the keen eyes of KAA officials immediately picked up suspicion and led to the individual's arrest by the Kenya Airport Police Unit (KAPU), preventing him from leaving the country.
"Kenyan authorities have thwarted a significant wildlife trafficking attempt at JKIA. An Indonesian national aboard flight KQ 571 was arrested for illegal possession of 38.4 kg of ivory valued at Kshs. 10M," a statement by KAA read in part.
Following prompt action by the KAPU, the suspect was arrested and seized ivory was handed over to Kenya Wildlife Authority (KWS) officials. Their cooperation dealt a significant blow to the illegal ivory trade. This incident at JKIA follows the recent arrest of two individuals in possession of wildlife trophies in Kibwezi, Machakos County, by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The police intercepted the duo hailing from Kajiado county in possession of 7 pieces of Ivory worth Sh1 million and weighing 7kgs. It is illegal under Kenyan law to commit such a crime. Suspects could be indicted with up to a 5-year prison sentence. Moreover, dealing in, keeping or being in the possession of any wildlife trophy is also barred by the Wildlife Conservation Management Act.
