Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has confirmed that the Azimio Coalition remains united and strong, even without Raila Odinga.
In a statement on Sunday, Musyoka assured that there will be no leadership void within the opposition as Odinga pursues the chairmanship of the African Union Commission. While supporting Odinga's ambitions, Musyoka emphasized that the focus remains on Kenya's best interests, going beyond individual political allegiances. In response to Odinga's announcement, a meeting of Azimio leaders including Kalonzo, Martha Karua, and Peter Munya, reiterated their commitment to the coalition's unity and goals. Musyoka emphasized that the coalition stands together to protect Kenya's rights and interests, showing a continued collective effort for the nation's advancement.
The former vice president highlighted the importance of resolving contentious issues arising from the 2022 elections, stressing the need for transparency and accountability to prevent future disputes. The opposition has disputed recent legal developments that allow the previous panel appointed by President Ruto to recruit new commissioners. Judge Mugure Thande of the High Court clarifies that, despite the political agreement between Azimio and Kenya Kwanza, the existing constitutional guidelines regarding the appointment of new IEBC commissioners remain in effect.
Musyoka intends to bolster the Wiper party through widespread recruitment efforts and the establishment of branches nationwide. This approach mirrors the tactics employed by other political parties to solidify their sway and grassroots backing. The opposition's stance on the Housing Levy Bill attests to their ongoing commitment to scrutinizing governmental policies and laws, underscoring their dedication to advocating for the people's concerns. The backing and approval of Musyoka by influential individuals within Odinga's inner circle including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna affirms the unity within the opposition.
This indicates a strategic alignment towards achieving their collective goals, even in Odinga's absence from local politics. Musyoka's aspirations for the presidency in 2027 are echoed by his colleagues who see him as the suitable successor to Odinga's leadership legacy. The steadfast backing from within the opposition group positions Musyoka as a leading contender for the presidency, bolstered by his longstanding collaboration with Odinga and their shared aspirations for the nation's future.
Meanwhile, East Africa Legislative Assembly MP David Ole Sankok has thrown his support behind Raila Odinga's bid for African Union Commission chair, citing him as Kenya's best candidate for Pan-African leadership. Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala also endorse Odinga's candidacy, praising his Pan-Africanist credentials. COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has also voiced his support for Raila's aspiration, citing his extensive qualifications.
