Nairobi recently witnessed an unexpected and thrilling encounter with lions.
On Thursday, May 16th, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) issued a cautionary notice to residents of Lang'ata about the presence of three roaming lions in the vicinity. According to reports, the lions were allegedly sighted near Langata Women's Prison, sending ripples of excitement and concern through the community. In response to the sightings, the KWS Problem Animal Control team swiftly mobilized and conducted an extensive search throughout the night.
Despite their best efforts and tireless dedication, the officers were unable to locate the elusive felines. Nevertheless, KWS remains vigilant, closely monitoring the situation and prioritizing the safety of the public. In a statement, KWS urges residents to stay alert and report any wildlife sightings to their 24-hour hotline or via WhatsApp for immediate intervention. They emphasise that ensuring the safety of the public is their top priority.
This incident is not the first time Nairobi has encountered roaming lions. In July 2021, residents of Ongata Rongai were gripped with fear when a lion was spotted in the area. KWS officers, accompanied by police, swiftly responded dispersing the curious crowd and ensuring the safe capture of the sub-adult lion. Viral images from that incident depicted the lioness lying in a narrow alley between a building wall and an iron sheet fence. Wardens skillfully carried the animal into a waiting KWS vehicle as onlookers witnessed.
Nairobi is no stranger to occasional wildlife sightings, reminding residents of the city's unique coexistence with nature.
Nairobi is also lions' ancestral land. So, let man coexist peacefully with nature.
