Whispers circulating in the capital on Monday hinted that President William Ruto is poised to dismiss at least 15 Principal Secretaries (PSs) as part of a comprehensive restructuring within his administration.
However, these claims have been refuted by a close ally of the President who dismisses them as baseless. During a panel discussion on Daybreak, Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei addressed these speculations, asserting that the recent meetings and interactions between President Ruto and his Cabinet are more focused on fostering unity rather than executing a major personnel overhaul. This discussion followed a breakfast meeting at State House where Ruto convened with newly appointed Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) and PSs. Sigei explains that the President's current priority is addressing the aftermath of recent protests led by Gen Z activists.
He suggests that the State House session was intended to strengthen relationships and reinforce the government's commitment to regaining public trust. He elaborates that the breakfast gathering did not include discussions about who would remain in office or depart. Despite these assurances, there are indications that President Ruto is considering streamlining the government structure. The President's vision reportedly includes consolidating certain government departments and reshaping the cabinet, which could lead to the appointment of new high-ranking officials and a restructuring of existing roles.
This proposed reorganization is part of a broader plan to enhance efficiency, optimize administration, and reduce expenses. During a recent meeting, President Ruto emphasized the importance of unity and a shared commitment to serving the nation. "We are one team, and we must work as one," he asserted, stressing that the focus should be on Kenya rather than personal connections. President Ruto's newly formed administration is notable for its inclusivity, encompassing a diverse range of individuals, including prominent members of the ODM party who have been entrusted with crucial roles.
This 'broad-based' approach to government formation suggests a willingness to incorporate various perspectives and experiences, rather than relying solely on members from the president's own political affiliation. The recent appointments made by President Ruto represent a significant political transition, as he has brought on board individuals who were previously aligned with opposition leader Raila Odinga. This strategic move is viewed as a decisive effort to address the unrest that had disrupted economic activities throughout the nation and to promote national unity.
