Mystery of Nakuru Man Dragged from Bed, Fatally Shot by Intruders

On Tuesday, October 8, Mathew Letyo and his wife Cynthia Chepkemoi spent an ordinary day together unaware of the tragedy that would unfold as night fell.
The couple's peaceful routine was shattered around 10 PM when four armed individuals, later identified as police officers, forcefully entered their compound. The intruders demanded to see Letyo without explanation, creating a scene of chaos and fear. As the situation escalated, Letyo attempted to flee, prompting three officers to give chase. Moments later, the sound of gunshots pierced the air. Witnesses report that Letyo was shot in the stomach and subsequently dragged approximately 50 meters to the compound gate, where a motorbike awaited.
Chepkemoi, overwhelmed with anguish, affirms that her husband had been killed. The brutality of the incident was compounded when two officers allegedly returned to ransack the couple's home, absconding with money and personal items under the pretence that Letyo had intended to use them as weapons. Letyo's mother Paulina Kipsimian received a distressing call from her daughter-in-law shortly after the incident. The family's trauma was exacerbated by claims of police intimidation, which reportedly silenced Chepkemoi's initial attempts to seek answers and justice.
Investigations into the incident have revealed a possible connection to a recent disagreement between Letyo and a neighbour over livestock grazing. This dispute has been suggested as a potential motive for the police action, though the exact circumstances remain unclear. Noah Chesire, Letyo's brother, expresses uncertainty about whether this altercation played a role in the tragic outcome. Adding to the community's dismay, it is noted that Letyo had recently embraced a life of faith, regularly attending church in the weeks preceding his death.
Local elder John Busienei confirms Letyo's standing as a respected community member. The incident is currently under investigation by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation, with oversight from the Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA). As the community mourns, there is a collective call for accountability and justice for Letyo's family, who have been left to grapple with the aftermath of this violent encounter.
